What is 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten?
1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is a self-guided reading program for parents to prepare their children for Kindergarten. Studies show the more often children hear books read to them, the more prepared they are to learn to read once they start school. The goal of 1,000BBK is to encourage each child to experience 1,000 books before school.
Why is it it important to read to young kids?
You are your child's first teacher and your home is where learning begins. When you talk, sing, read, write, and play together, you are helping your child get ready to read.
Developing early literacy skills begins at birth and is continuous. The best way to prepare a child to read is by reading aloud to him or her.
By visiting your library often together, you can teach your child how the library works, how to respect books, and how to appreciate all materials available from the library!
Is it really possible to read 1,000 books before kindergarten?
Yes! The program can be started at any age prior to Kindergarten and can be completed in a few months or years depending on how often you read.
The best place to start would be in the library's picture book section!
Who reads the books and what counting rules are there?
Anyone can read a book to your child, including story time librarians and preschool teachers. Any book read in any format counts, even the same book over and over.
It can be a library book, a book from home, a book read at grandma's or a friend's house, or even an audiobook or e-book.
